Grumpy is a large, extremely aggressive male Tyrannosaurus rex featured in the 2009 adaptation of the Land of the Lost franchise. He serves as the secondary antagonist of the film, but later became an anti-hero later during the fight against the Sleestaks.

Personality & Appearance[]

Standing 18-20 feet tall and measuring 50 feet long, Grumpy is a large Tyrannosaurus rex with a primarily grayish-black skin tone with black tiger-like stripes and forehead featuring three rows of prominent, ridge like scales with the middle row running across his back and ending near the tip of his tail. Grumpy features a small scar on the right side of his upper lip, consisting of 3 parallel slash marks.

Grumpy is apparently a reptile of some age and incredibly intelligent, even for a dinosaur, with the ability to understand the meaning of an insult from Dr. Rick Marshall, upon which he developed a lasting grudge against the doctor. This perceived slight serves as Grumpy's motivation throughout the vast majority of his antagonism, compelling him to stalk Rick and his expedition across the Land of the Lost.

Grumpy is shown to have an extreme aggressive disposition, which Dr. Marshall attributes to an intestinal blockage. However, Dr. Marshall insulting his brain size seems to be another factor in his aggressive tendencies.

History[]

Grumpy's past in the Land of the Lost is unknown, but it could be assumed that he was either born there, or was simply teleported there at a time when it it was linked to the Earth's prehistoric past.

Grumpy is first seen looming over a stranded astronaut before being encountered by Dr. Rick Marshall and his expedition soon after they entered the Land of the Lost, when they become ensnared by sentient vines above his feeding station. Grumpy chased the four intruders through the forest and eventually halted upon encountering a chasm that his prey had crossed over. Seeing no reason to further pursue his targets, he began to walk away, only to overhear Marshall insult his brain size, which stopped him dead in his tracks. The dinosaur then turned to glare at the arrogant doctor and proceeded to leap across the chasm to continue his pursuit. Grumpy proceeded to chase the humans to a cave, only for him to be stopped by the small entrance. After roaring in frustration, he walks away back towards his den. Holly then makes a comment about his sullen nature, which leads to the expedition nicknaming him "Grumpy".

Later on, Grumpy hurls an enormous walnut towards his targets, which served as a reminder of his presence to the expedition.

Grumpy proceeds to stalk the characters to the desert wasteland area of the Land of the Lost, where he meets an unnamed female allosaurus. The two begin to fight over an ice cream truck that had recently fallen from the sky. However, the two carnivores smell Marshall, who had previously doused himself in hadrosaur urine in an attempt to evade Grumpy. The two carnivores chase Marshall through the wasteland, although Grumpy soon lost interest or got distracted by something else, leaving the unnamed allosaur to pursue the expedition.

Grumpy continues to follow the expedition, eventually tracking them to a ruined city deep in the jungle, where they had encountered with Enik, who had deceived them into aiding his plan of universal domination just seconds before. Grumpy and Marshall face off in an effort to resolve their conflict. After a brief, admittedly one-sided, confrontation, Marshall proceeds to vault himself into Grumpy's stomach. However, a short while later, Grumpy excretes Marshall out, who unintentionally ends up clearing an intestinal blockage that had apparently been causing Grumpy to be so aggressive. Marshall then rides Grumpy into battle against Enik's army of mind-controlled Sleestak in order to save his friends, and the group proceeds onward to confront Enik. Grumpy is last seen roaring into the sky, asserting his dominance over the Land of the Lost.
